SHELTER SKELTER
By Christine Werthman
A new study revealed that most tenants facing eviction show up to city court without lawyers. The study, conducted by the City University of New York and New York University, concluded that 76 percent of the group surveyed over a two-year period had no legal defense. Perhaps this relates to another recent study—released by Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office last week, which showed that the number of families entering homeless shelters has increased by 24 percent. That whole cause and effect thing can be such a bummer.
