CRIME BLOTTER

Bad Drugs Made Worse

By Doug Black

Drug trafficking is an endemic problem in New York, but some drug-dealing crimes are far more convoluted than others. Jose Rodriguez, 46, was convicted recently and faces a life sentence for leading a heroin-dealing ring out of his Bronx neighborhood. And if that indictment weren’t damning enough, he was known to frequently spike his drug supply with numerous chemicals, including animal tranquilizers. The additives made the product even more addictive and Rodriguez even more of a criminal menace.

In other news, an appellate judge recently ruled that two police officers were within the confines of the law when they pulled a supply of crack cocaine out of a drug dealer’s own personal crack during a search. In the lower court, Azim Hall was initially successful in having his indecent search ruled inadmissible in his drug-dealing case. The recent overrule, however, will certainly hurt Hall’s case and should also stand as a warning for other rectal drug transporters to watch their rear.
