BAIT AND SWITCH 2.0
By Adario Strange
An odd thing happened on the way to social media utopia—apparently, it got hijacked. This is the claim being made by some in the wake of Jimmy Wales’ (founder of Wikipedia) new announcement of several new media blogs meant to focus on entertainment, politics and local news. In 2006, Wales announced a free service called Openserving that was designed to offer free hosting and blog tools to Internet users. The Internet community largely applauded the move as a nod towards empowering independent journalism. Shortly after the announcement, Wales showed off the site, but only offered a tour of what users would have available, in the interim, potential users could only “register” to use the site in the near future. After several months, the Openserving site still hasn’t opened to the public. Hence, the unveiling of Wales’ new blogs this week—which look exactly like the sites promised to users at Openserving—has irked many in the so-called blogosphere. The new sites are said to have originated from Wales’ acquisition of the online sports community, ArmchairGM. As of this writing, Openserving remained closed offering on this message to the Internet community, “Openserving will go live shortly. In the meantime, we can offer you the following tour to satisfy your curiosity.”
