NO PARKING IN THE SLOPE

By Doug Black

If there is one thing harder than navigating the doublewide strollers careening down a Park Slope avenue over the weekend, it's finding a spot for the family car. And according to Transportation Alternatives, a non-profit advocating cleaner forms of transport, the Slope’s parking situation is the worst in the entire city. The group’s recent study calculates that 45 percent of drivers in the neighborhood are simply cruising the streets in search of a curbside spot, and 15 percent of vehicles are parked illegally. Although the goal of the Transportation Alternatives’ analysis was to foster a greater adoption of bicycle and foot locomotion, local business owners complain that the parking dearth takes a hefty chunk out of their sales when potential consumers opt to shop in less dense areas. What a cruel twist of irony it would be if officials decided solve the issue by turning Prospect Park into parking lot.
