Last Thursday, some New York City council members said they’d like to raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21. California tried something like this in 2002, but the proposal has yet to make it into law. New York has a history of following California’s anti-smoking lead: We were one of the first two states to copy the granola state’s ban on smoking in restaurants in 2003. Bloomberg supported the 2003 ban, but said he disagreed with the proposed restriction because increasing the smoking age would not decrease the number of underage smokers. If NYC does follow California’s lead this time, say goodbye to cigarettes and porn on your 18th birthday. But don’t worry—the kiddies can still go to war.
