Animazing Gallery has unveiled Dr. Seuss’ limited edition bronze figure of rhyme mascot “Cat in the Hat.” Weighing more than a ton and standing 8 feet tall, avid readers can see their frisky feline come to life for free on Soho’s Broome Street. Aside from the monstrous statuette, watercolors of comical creatures—from the superior “Thoober Bird” (pictured) to rump stabbing “Ann the Mosquito”—are all delicately framed and proudly displayed for prospective buyers. Even if you don’t have the quarter million dollars for a Dr. Seuss original, the collection is worth a peek. While you would expect one of America’s most beloved characters to be displayed in a more exclusive space, the Animazing Gallery is cluttered with Disney, Warner Brothers and Peanuts cartoons living in not so peaceful harmony. The gallery, resembling a disordered vintage shop, can be overwhelming and downright confusing at times (key words: free and AC). Besides, only in New York can you pay homage to one of cartoon’s most influential artists and then walk a block for a dirt cheap hot dog. Check it out; as Ann would say, “And I do mean you!”
Through Sept. 4. Animazing Gallery, 461 Broome St. (betw. Greene & Mercer Sts.), 800-303-4848.
